SPI team took part in Public-Private Conference and Expo in Dallas

SPI President and CEO Mary Scott Nabers, along with consultants Edgar Antu and Turner Kimbrough, united with more than 1,000 other conferees last week at the largest and most diverse gathering of its kind at the Dallas Sheraton Hotel for three days of panels and presentations related to public-private partnerships (P3s). This symposium offered government officials and industry representatives a rich forum for knowledge sharing and networking. Leaders from federal, city and local governments of all sizes, as well as experts in industries such as construction, railways and high technology turned up in the event. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock started the event describing how a big city has used public-private partnerships to get redevelopment projects going – and what’s ahead for the Mile High City. Hancock cited that state and local governments underwrite the vast majority — 88 percent — of transportation and water projects in the United States. Throughout the conference the sizeable marketplace surrounding the nation’s aging infrastructure was discussed. The lunch plenary session presented attendees a lively exchange addressing how public officials can evaluate complicated funding models and address the fallacies that often hinder these kinds of projects – within government agencies and among members of the public. Separate sessions during the conference encompassed case studies of fruitful P3 projects ranging from the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project in Pennsylvania to the innovative “hybrid” P3 approach helping to develop the civic center in Long Beach, Calif. Water infrastructure projects were emphasized in the conference, as no part of the country is immune to water woes. Conferees profited from reports of lessons learned and best practices from seasoned experts in P3s. Speakers from all sectors shared their nuts-and-bolts advice for getting projects off the ground, along with thoughts about managing expectations and public opinion.     Source: spartnerships.com
